Why flake floors are so popular
A flake floor starts with a colored epoxy or polyaspartic base. While that base is still wet, we broadcast decorative vinyl chips across the whole surface until no base color shows. After it cures, we scrape and vacuum away the loose chips and seal everything under a clear topcoat. The result looks a bit like terrazzo or granite and feels slightly textured underfoot.
That texture is a big part of why people love these floors. It gives better grip than a smooth glossy surface, especially when the floor gets wet from a dripping car or a hose. The multicolored chips also hide the things that make garages look dirty: dust, leaf litter blowing in on a windy day, light tire marks and small scratches.
Built thicker
A full flake system is one of the thickest residential coatings you can install. The layer of chips adds body between the base and topcoat, which helps the floor resist impact from dropped tools and abrasion from grit. That extra build also helps with heat, since a thicker, well-bonded floor is far less prone to hot tire pickup than a thin single-coat product.
Choosing a blend
We carry dozens of flake blends. A few tips from what we see work well in local homes:
- Tan and brown blends complement the beige and earth-tone stucco common in the neighborhood and hide the fine dust that blows in during dry months.
- Gray and black blends look modern and pair well with white or gray cabinets.
- Lighter blends make a garage feel larger and reflect more light, helpful in garages without windows.
- Darker blends hide tire marks best but can show dust more readily.
Chip size matters too. Standard quarter-inch chips give a classic look; smaller chips make a finer, more granite-like pattern. We bring physical samples to your home so you can see them in your own light.
Our flake installation steps
Grind and repair
We start with diamond grinding and HEPA vacuuming, then fill cracks and repair spalls. Clay soil movement often leaves corner cracks in older slabs, and those are routed out and filled before any color goes down.
Base coat and broadcast
We apply a pigmented base coat that matches the overall tone of your chips, then broadcast flakes to full rejection, meaning we keep adding chips until the surface will not take any more.
Scrape and clean
After cure, we scrape off loose and standing chips and vacuum thoroughly. This step creates a smooth, even texture.
Clear topcoat
A UV-stable clear polyaspartic or urethane seals the chips. We can adjust the texture by how heavily we apply the topcoat: thinner for more grip, thicker for a smoother feel.
Where flake works best
Flake floors suit garages, workshops, laundry rooms, mud rooms, basements, covered patios, small retail spaces, gyms and break rooms. They are a common choice for car hobbyists who want a showroom look that is forgiving of daily use. Commercial clients use them in locker rooms, veterinary clinics and restrooms because they clean easily and offer slip resistance.
Flake versus solid color
Solid color floors look clean and sleek, but they show every speck of dust and every scratch. Flake floors cost a bit more because of the chip material and the extra labor of broadcasting and scraping, yet they are thicker, grippier and much more forgiving. For most families, flake ends up being the floor they are happiest with years later.
Caring for a flake floor
Sweep or use a leaf blower to clear grit. Mop with a neutral cleaner and a soft deck brush to get into the texture. Avoid harsh acids and citrus degreasers that can dull the topcoat. With that routine, a flake floor stays attractive for many years.
Common questions
Will the chips come loose?
No. They are locked between the base and the clear topcoat.
Is it slippery when wet?
Flake floors have natural texture, and we can add extra anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat for wet areas.
How long does it take?
Most garages are finished in one to two days, depending on the base and topcoat chemistry.
